Managing
meetings to secure a desired outcome.
Bringing groups of people together to understand a common
theme or objective is a task undertaken by managers on a daily
basis. Very few are ever trained in the process. Meetings
can vary in size from one to one, to one to many. Some meetings
are designed for giving information, some for sharing. Most
meetings are not designed at all, they merely fall into a
method based on habit.
At BIA, we aim to bring managers attention to the methods
that meetings can be managed effectively to achieve a given
outcome, where the participants feel they have been involved
in an acceptable manner, and all attendees can describe the
content and outcome of the meeting after the event in harmony.
Staff Appraisals
Appraisals are another form of meeting where it is essential
that the desired outcome is achieved, and all parties involved
are in agreement with both the methodology and the outcome.
Every company has in place an appraisal system, anything from
a half an hour chat and a pay rise, to a formal process clearly
defined by procedures.
Two things stand out in either eventuality. It is essential
that the manager carrying out the appraisal has a method by
which measurement of the individual can be proven to be objective
rather than subjective, and that both parties are able to
communicate effectively to resolve any issues that may arise.
At BIA, we aim to work in partnership with the management
team to bring about an awareness of how these key features
can be achieved. In many cases we believe we can offer minor,
but significant additions to process that will make appraisals
something that employees and managers actually look forward
to.
